HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION

Did you purchase a house last year?

If so, this is your friendly reminder to file your Homestead Exemption!

Why is this important?

Exemptions are a form of tax relief that can help reduce the taxable value of your home. For example, let’s say you qualified for a $25k exemption. This means that your house valued at $200k will only be taxed on $175k!

How do you file the Homestead Exemption?

You can obtain an application for a residential homestead exemption online, or in person at the central appraisal district of the county where your property is located. Be certain that the address listed on the driver license corresponds to the address of the property for which an exemption is claimed on the application.

When are you able to file?

In order to receive the exemption, you must already own and be living in the property as of January 1st for the year that are requesting an exemption. You can file as soon as January 1st, but the deadline is April 30th. So don’t wait!
